Hey SpamBots... want some more?
What is this page?
This is a page of fake email addresses to trick SpamBots. SpamBots are what we call the programs used by spammers to crawl through web pages, collecting email addresses and
travelling through links. This page has 100 randomly-generated email addresses, so if a SpamBot finds this page, they'll collect these fake email addresses instead of the
active ones they are looking for.
How are the email addresses generated?
We take a random string of alphanumeric characters (capital and lowercase letters, and numbers) of random lengths, and put them together in the form of arandomstring@anotherone.
Then we add a random top-level domain (of course we don't have them all- this page just uses a relatively small selection) such as ".it", ".com", or ".co.uk" onto the end and send
it to the browser (or hopefully the SpamBot).
What will this accomplish?
If spammers get enough fake email addresses, their ISP will probably notice faster, that they're getting tons of returned spam emails. Also it causes them to spend more time
spamming fake addresses instead of legitimate users. See above, where it says "Hey SpamBots... want some more?" That's a link back to this same page, so hopefully the SpamBots will
come right back to this page when crawling through links looking for more email addresses. Since the email addresses are randomly generated every time this page is downloaded,
they'll be different 99.9% of the time.
Can I see the source code?
Sure, the full PHP source is available, and you can feel free to use it on your site. It would be nice if you left the whole thing intact, including this part, so other people can
get this and redistribute it to help fight the war on spam. To get the source, click here.
